Onetarieva
For this first Trotsky Icepick release with Urinals / 100 Flowers vocalist John Talley-Jones, the band adopted a tongue in cheek harder-rocking approach, more straight ahead than on the previous 'Baby' release. New drummer Hunter Crowley (The Last / leaving Trains) was a less artsy yet more powerful addition. There are several tracks here that demonstrate the live potential of the new lineup including a spot on cover of Magazine's "The Light Pours Out of Me." These guys are a little tweeked and their selection of material would appeal to fans of They Might Be Giants or Bonzo Dog Band. The title track asserts that amorous attraction is painfully similar to a head injury. "Cornfield" with it's soaring vocal harmonies by Talley-Jones and guitarist Vitus Matare describes the aftermath of an Outer Limits episode that is remarkably similar to post-Reagan America. Goofy subject matter for sure, yet there is one particularly memorable power-pop gem on this disc, "Astronomer" that should not be overlooked.
