Thetath
Dimlite's THIS IS EMBRACING doesn't let the funk kick in on "Locked," but when it does, there's no turning back. The tracks here constantly morph and transform, lending itself to a journey. So the guitar stabs on "Lullaby For Gastric Ulcer" give way to a distorted soul voice accompanied by a double bass. But the gentle "Outernational Duet" has Gaby Hernandez's vocals unadorned and front-and-center. But he also has a love for the strange (and strangely funny) samples, usually conveniently situated at the start or end of a track. But he can do meditative guitar, as on "Bougainvillea Chamber," or hand-clap jams, as on "The Way Blood Travels," just as well. "Now Walk" starts with a percussive frenzy but emerges with a nice piano roll instead. You can really wrap your arms around this album.
