I just stumbled across Flying Fish (Im no D&B fan) and I'm hooked. Yes, some of their work is pure D&B but much of it has underlying elements of jazz and funk and some is pure jazz funk. This EP shows off that creative versatility very well. Side A (original mix) starts with a typical D&B beat which evolves into something else when a double bass and sax join in. Is there a style called Jazzy D&B? Don't know and don't care. It sounds great. Next up on side B is the Mr Dan mix: a funky drum beat at 170 bpm with synth and bass combining well to make for a great dancefloor groove. Is there such a thing as Funky D&B? It's brilliant! Sides C and D are mixes that take me more into what I think of as D&B. Both good but not really my thang. Is the Flying Fish sound original? Maybe not. But it's different to anything I've ever heard before and I'm an instant fan.
