I'm not the world's greatest Neil Young scholar but I've read quite a bit to suggest this is one of his best albums, probably due to circumstances and the lyrics they reflect. However I feel the album is too threadbare, the melodies too 'average' (nothing of rare beauty here) and the performance energy neither ragged, grungy nor forceful enough to stir me much. 'On the Beach', 'Ragged Glory' '.. Goldrush' plus quite a few other albums showcase more of this man's talent. Average, but worth having all the same, we are talking about Neil Young after all! Oh and a little advice for whingey rock stars.. If you are tired of fame and unimpressed with the 'music biz' and helicopter rides to your own gigs, quit carping and go do something else with your time (or write a song of course!)

If the title track itself doesn't stir you, there's something wrong with you.On the other hand, you're right about some of the tracks being "average".If someone says this is the "best" Neil Young record, they may be interpretingits emotional force and conferring greatness upon it because of that. But trackslike Tonight's The Night, Speakin' Out, World On A String, Come On Baby, RollAnother Number, Tired Eyes, and the reprise are quite capable of imparting thatfeeling -- and for good reason. They've stood up as a document of Neil's emotionalstate while recording this music. He's not complaining; he's relating. And when anartist bares his (Mr) soul in such a way, people rightfully respond with empathy and/orsympathy.That's one of the traits that makes music timeless, and so it does for this music. For an actual set of songs, I prefer Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but Tonight'sThe Night is special as well.

This record grew on me over the years, to where its the one I've listened to most now. The raggedness is part of its charm, like an old Sleepy John Estes recording, expressing sadness and alienation, his voice cracking like he's crying while he sings. "Albuquerque" as a beautiful melody and great lyrics too.
