Funny duck
Hardfloor - The Life We Choose Ah the 303 aviary is back. Acid harmonics chirping away on an infectious beat. Works every time. 'The Trill Acid Theme' weaves itz journey in timeless Hardfloor fashion. However, beauty makes room for the beast of '...Me, Three', an unforgiving hard trance workout, who's medium pace is fooling no one. Reassuringly classic Hardfloor returns again on 'Melorec'. The phat, flat claps and syncopated squidges welcomed like an old friend who is back with a grin. Seductively uplifting. We get all serious (apart from the grammer) on 'Itz Ok' (club mix), a reminder of the "faceless techno bollox" philosophy which created the environment for a flurry of innovation in dance music in the early 90s. Reminiscent of early Network releases and fluttering itz chrome eyelashes at Warp records, the title track 'The Life We Choose' is 808 overload. Thoroughbred intelligent techno. 'Swiffer' surfs on a bed of plate reverb and a hypnotic metalic groove. Sparse and almost clinical. But respite comes in the form of 'Who You Gonna Call' , a beautiful blend of jazzy acid funkiness which only serves to prove that Hardfloor's Dadamnpreakthing experience made them classier than ever. And to show this new level of sophistication is no 'Fluke' 'Apollo & Zeus' is dadaman prettiest tune I have heard for a long while. A catchy dancehall bassline and perfectly formed groove introduces a string and acid hook which soaks everything in a golden haze. Hardfloor at their peak. Awesome. To keep it all in balance we return to the dancefloor for the final two. 'The Question Remains' is a classic no nonsense four to the floor acid funker. Reassuringly familiar yet subtley progressive. Drawing to a close with the album version of 'Itz Ok', Hardfloor prove they have lost nothing and found plenty. Wunderbar. Sam Monroe
