Qucid
I’m gonna admit it right off the bat, I had a lot of trouble with Tom’s release, The Last DJ, finding it a bit fractured, lacking in structure, and full of complaints for which few artists are doing anything about ... and that’s the cost of ticket prices. So I wasn’t surprised when my head did some sideways glances as his Mojo outing rose up and danced across my brain with a sense of satisfaction I haven’t experience in a very long time. And I’m talking long time as in Al Kooper, Steve Stills, Mike Bloomfield's, Super Session long time. Honestly just pick up on “First Flash Of Freedom,” a groovy, bit of jazz, and funked jive, built on solid rock and roll.Of course I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but “Running Man’s Bible” has just settled in, my eyes are closed and my heads bopping to a groove that has me beginning to believe that suspended disbelief actually exists ... ‘cause man, I’m somewhere else, that’s for sure. This is a stunning polished piece of wax, yet sounds as if it’s rolling right off the cuff, dominated by stretched out jam like arrangements, filled with dark hooks, and completely dominated by a bluesy haze through which every note is filtered. Honestly, for the first time Tom manages to create an atmosphere that rides through each and every song, tying them together, full of wanderlust, and hypnotic trances that wrap themselves around me like gossamer. A few other tracks have a J.J. Cale Tulsa sound that will have your feet doing a little dance, and giving your hands a life of their own.One critic wrote, “But the sad truth is that on meandering tunes such as “Jefferson Jericho Blues,” “U.S. 41,” and “Good Enough,” Petty, who’s made a trademark of sounding disarmingly laid back, for once comes off as just bored and disengaged.” Well, I’m sure that Mr. DeRogatis, who gave this album all of one and a half stars, needed to find something to complain about, and just looking at his fat smugged face makes me want to thrust $75 into his hand and tell him to go buy himself a ticket to the show, then we’ll see just how disengaged, and bored he really is.Mojo draws deeply from everything, sounding like nothing you ever heard before, and in the same breath sounding so familiar that you’ll find yourself singing right out loud, and then noticing that you don’t really know the lyrics ... but that’s half the fun ... and Mojo has a lot of satisfaction to offer.Jump in anywhere, you won’t have any trouble finding the groove …Review by Jenell Kesler
