I bought this album on vinyl, second hand, from a great old shop in late '70s Brighton called Brighton Rock. One room was filled with jazz vinyl. Wish I had a time machine to go back and go through that room.... tons of original Sun Ras, Cecil Taylors, Aylers, Sanders,Incus vinyl, Byg records etc etc.Anyway - this album cost me £3 or something. What a carve up! Heaviness incarnate with the giant Moog sending out impenetrable blasts of electronic noise and Hans Bennink, the crazed Dutch drummer, rumbling tumbling 'round his kit. This story has an unhappy ending because I foolishly sold the vinyl of Dual Unity sometime in the '80s, probably for about 50p knowing me. I was always getting rid of stuff - usually so i could buy some more, but I always regretted selling this album.I just got it back on CD and it's a joy to hear once again the cataclysmic noise that is Dual Unity. The first track M.J lures you in with a melodic and minimal synth line. Plenty to enjoy here and it's not so far out this one, although it did probably blow a few minds in 1971.The next three tracks are different beasts though... total carnage with electronic squalls of sound generated on the big Moog by Bley. It's free improvisation so there's no metre, no melody and no form as such - just monstrous blasts of beautiful skronk.I can see why people wouldn't enjoy this record. It's pretty harsh, especially the last three tracks. Bear in mind this was recorded in 1970 (released in '71) ... free improv was in its infancy and it was part of the 'anything goes' school of music where the record companies didn't really know what those crazy kids were gonna buy next so they just put out everything. I miss that era - once the record companies worked out what sold - then this type of release was increasingly marginalised and things became a lot safer.I got a lot out of this CD this afternoon - I put it on 'repeat' and just let it roll around for a few revolutions. Electronic skronk - there's not a lot of it about of this vintage. If you're a fan of free improv then it's worth checking.
