Summary taken from http://www.rhino.co.uk

"The obsession with making your own tapes in the 80s was widespread, either from vinyl sources or the Radio 1 Top 40 countdown combined with some nifty finger work on the pause button! The music policy was more rock and quirky pop than the straight Bangles and Wham that you might hear in the clubs.

80s Mixtape brings together a stellar line up of the best of the bunch from the Eighties with a selection including Orange Juice, The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Japan, Echo & The Bunnymen and more.

This is essentially the guitar/ bands equivalent of Ministry Of Sound’s Electronic 80s (same compiler) and also stands up next to 12”80s (UMTV) and Edge Of The 80s (Sony TV). These albums have highlighted the public’s appetite for products that dig a little deeper into the rich 80s catalogue, un-covering tracks and artists that may not grace the airwaves or compilation tracklists as much as they should, making it an essential purchase for many people.

Hence the inclusion of Strawberry Switchblade, Fine Young Cannibals, The Colourfield, The Higsons (Fast Show Charlie Higson’s band), Carmel, Matt Bianco, Then Jericho and The Beat. Not wishing to be too cool for school, there are also some big names making the final cut with David Bowie, Talking Heads, Prince, R.E.M. The Human League and Soft Cell, though due care has been taken to select the more under-compiled songs. The term ‘mixtape’ is enjoying a renaissance in the online DJ blogosphere and the humble cassette has made a comeback as a design icon on high street in fashion and other iconography".
