In 1983, the founding member of pioneering electronic band Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann, conceived of a record label that would be a home for a new genre of contemporary music. He recognised a need for a new kind of music to fill the void left by the great bands of the 70's. Those who grew up with The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan and The Band, were disenfranchised with the pop and heavy metal of the 80's, as their lives evolved into a new lifestyle.
The label was launched in 1985 with four stunning albums released to widespread critical acclain. Utilising a non-traditional distribution system and receiving virtually no radio play, the label was none -the-less an immediate sucess, spreading by word of mouth. Its' variety, depth, high technical quality and outstanding visual graphics coupled with the eclectic roster and innovative music, spurred the media to champion the label. Three years since its inception and with fifteen artists on its roster, Private Music has evolved as a leading source of new music which, collectively defies any categorization. The music is attracting fast rising interest from film, televison and advertising industries.
Not all music is Private Music, but what is, is for the mind's eye and the soul's ear.
