This strangely overlooked album must be one of the best classical piano recitals of recent years! Mihaela Ursuleasa's playing is absolutely stunning from beginning to end. Her performances are passionate, committed, full of virtuosity, flamboyant colours and, most importantly, expressive to the utmost degree. Each piece displays the Rumanian's pianist strong personality. She catches the «chiaroscuro» textures of Brahms late pieces with aching accuracy. With its deliberately slow tempo, Ondine will surprise fans of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, but ultimately it is one of the most spellbinding interpretations of this famous piece, vibrant and elusive like the water fairy it describes. Played as an encore, Constantinescu's Joc Dobrogean bursts with rhythmic drive and lively colours.Alas, Mihaela Ursuleasa died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 2012. She was 33.
