Discovery of a copy of this single in DJ John Peel's treasured metal box of favorite records after his death caused a renewed interest in this obscure novelty song and led to a 2009 archival MP3 release by the band, 'From the Frozen Tundra Vaults', which curiously does not include the band's best song, "Guys Are Not Proud". Their cute song about guys who are not above or too modest about having sex with sheep (keep in mind the band was based in Anchorage Alaska) was a sure fire novelty hit and also a favorite of Doctor Demento on his syndicated radio shows. Even rock critic Greil Marcus cites it in one of his books or columns. "Guys are not proud They’ll do it any time Guys do not care, They’ll stick it anywhere Guys are disgusting Their always lusting Guys are obscene Vile and unclean Guys are such creeps They’ll even do it with sheep"That anthem was sung by the group's 17 year old singer, Louise Disease, whose sister Maggie Johnson wrote the lyrics to the famous sheep-humping song. Needless to say, those provocative lyrics got a lot of college radio airplay in the early 1980's and the song has been a bit of a cult favorite on indiscreet radio ever since. It sometimes gets compared to the seminal Inflatable Boy Clams EP, and the similarly boy-taunting "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses. Apparently the driving musical force behind The Anemic Boyfriends was John A. Firmin, a sax player who has played with David Bromberg's band since 1975, and more recently been a member of the Johnny Nocturne Band. I've spent 30 years curious about this band and trying to find more info. And I just discovered that the sax player and musician credited with most of their music is someone I hung out and partied with backstage at a David Bromberg/Arlo Guthrie concert in 1984. Small world.
