Jark
DJ Krush first burst onto the scene with STRICTLY TURNTABLIZED, during the heady Mo'Wax days. And right from "Lunation," you can hear why it captured everyone's attention: the cut-up horns, the mysterious piano riff, the solid beats. "Fucked-Up Pendulum" and "To the Infinity" are more spare and abstract, with less reliance on traditional melody, and "Kemuri" sounds set to follow in its footsteps before the filtered, ghost-like horn line comes in. A spare jazz finds its way onto "Silent Ungah" (the jazz aspect comes out more in "Yeah" and "The Nightmare Of Ungah") but the easygoing lounge of "Dig This Vibe" makes that track stand out even more. Strict, but not unforgiving...

This CD is an amazing portrait of its era. To call it sparse or minimalist is a bit misleading; the beats are solid and intriguing, but to the point and alive. To call it the kissing cousin of trip-hop would be fair. This is what you listen to when you're focused on something and need to cut the frills out of the situation. As an added treat, there's a song featuring Black Thought of the Roots fame, and another featuring El-P from his Company Flow days; a definite pleasure for all you Def Jukies out there.

One of the best downtempo hip-hop albums I've ever heard. Sometimes a bit to minimalistic maybe, nevertheless a true milestone and a testamony to the musical genius of DJ Krush. Check "Dig this vibe" for one of the bluntest beats ever.
