FIELD RECORDINGS RECORDED AT LANIFICIO LEO IN AUGUST 2013
ARRANGED AND MIXED BY ATTILIO NOVELLINO AND SAVERIO ROSI
MASTERING BY JAMES PLOTKIN
ARTWORK BY EMILIO LEO

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear starts from feld recording session made by Attilio Novellino and Saverio Rosi in August of 2013 at the woolen mill “Lanificio Leo”, the oldest textile factory active in Calabria, founded in 1873 in Soveria Mannelli (Cz ), currently one of the most signifcant cases of company-museum in Italy and winner of Guggenheim Management Culture Prize in 2011.
The sounds produced by machines from the late 19th century, with their distinctive timbres and unusual rhythmics, were sampled, electronically processed, and recomposed in order to form the lintel for two long suites of electroacoustic music.
Around this industrial/post-digital backbone, Novellino and Rosi trace intricate sound inlays made using granular synthesis softwares, analog instruments_ modular synthesizers, organs, guitar and electric bass_ by cutting, digitally processing and harmoniously interweaving the instrumental contributions of two key fgures in the contemporary free-improv and experimental scene: Rob Mazurek, cornet-electronics, and Tim Barnes, percussion-objects.
The work is the second vinyl release of Discreetrecords catalogue, limited edition of 250 copies, graphic design and packaging by Emilio Leo

fightnight
The Out Door, 200 Words: A monthly Pitchfork column about experimental, avant-garde, and outsider music by Marc Masters. The conceptual complexity of Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear is so rich you can hear it in the first moment. As Attilio Novellino explains below, the process that he and Saverio Rosi used to concoct these two entrancing pieces developed in three separate steps, and each one added a substantial layer of motion and texture. Sometimes when multiple creative minds meet for this kind of project, the whole can seem to blur the parts, but in this case everything you might expect from these four thoughtful players is right there to be clearly heard. Equally impressive is the way Novellino and Rosi edit their myriad sources in a way that consistently surprises, and resolutely refuses to settle. There’s patience in these sounds for sure, but we never get the kind of rote stretches of inert minimalism that collaborations like this can often fall prey to. This pair knows, to a near-psychic level, exactly when to let things go and exactly when to make things happen, splitting the difference between patience and activity uncannily. Which puts Objects In Mirror somewhere between masterful electronic collage and natural acoustic alchemy, a somewhere I would like to stay for a while.http://the-out-door.tumblr.com/post/105884401570/200-words-novellino-rosi-mazurek-barnes
