AMAZING unknown off-the-wall totally OUT THERE slab of mind-frying ACID psych here from Distant Jim, "Cosmarama" b/w "Just A Little Bit" on the Dutch Negram label. No date given, but would appear to be late 60's. I wish I could tell you even ONE thing about this mysterious "Distant Jim", but I couldn't find a single bit of info anywhere on this release. Although here's a VERY interesting fact: Both sides of this RARE single are produced by "Geoff Gill for Morgan Music Productions"! Almost positive that this would HAVE to be the same Geoff Gill from the UK freakbeat psych band the Smoke (plus Fickle Pickle and various others) who incidentally worked for Morgan Studios in the UK! Except NOTHING that I can find is even mentioned about this little rarity. So what's it like? "Cosmarama" is everything you'd expect from a title like that - a total cosmic acid headtrip, one part psych and one part early prog - lots of interstellar Pink Floyd cymbal washes, and some completely stoned one...syllable...at...a...time vocals. But just like "Careful With that Axe, Eugene", you get lulled into a deep outer space groove, and then...BAM! Distant Jim here hits us HARD with an absolutely RAUCOUS KILLER fried acid guitar onslaught that's one part grunge (long before the term existed) and one part Neil Young in full assault mode (while Neil was still around). It's an absolutely AMAZING ragged guitar solo that jams on and on for the whole second half of this song - and it's a LONG one too, running at OVER 6 MINUTES! Gotta wonder how this ever got a single release, but hey, I'm glad it did! The flip, "Just A Little Bit" - well...let's see...what can you say about a song that combines the riff and melody from the Beatles "Birthday" to some authentic, beer-soaked belching? Well, that's the way this one starts, believe it or not - a melody that's pretty darned close to the Beatles White Album classic, and some honest to goodness Dutch imported burps. After the gas runs out, it's a nice twisted psych pop tune with some cool echoed-out vocals. A WEIRD one, for sure - wish I knew more about this Distant Jim character, or how much Geoff Gill was really involved Popsike 2005
