Notes
Issue 98! of Arte Postale magazine in 50 handnumbered copies, A4 format with attached enhanced cd including mov video documentation of the opening, and photos and texts sections."Presented from the 16th to the 30th of november 2008 at the Maffei Arte Contemporanea gallery in Viareggio, Italy, the exhibition borrows the title from a very popular song of the Sixties written by Sylvia Fricker and carried to success by We Five, Barry McGuire and others (in Italy, with the title translated as Io ho in mente te and new lyrics by Mogol, it was sung by Equipe 84). On the opening day, the special guest Manitù Rossi of the band Le Forbici di Manitù sung his original and obsessive electronic version of the piece. Fifteen different cover versions of the song were then used as a non-stop soundtrack to the show.
I selected twentyfour authors from fourteen countries as a semi-random but meaningful sample of the “enlarged family” of mail art. In the first room of the exhibition, a letter size work (UniA4) from each author, culled from my archive, has been matched with a two-sided new collage with the silhouette of my head in the centre (a deliberate hint to the many silhouettes drawn and circulated by Ray Johnson). Each collage contained several visual and textual references to the corresponding mail artist. The visitors could in any moment handle and turn the collages, so that the show could constantly change shape.
The networkers featured in the show were: Anna Banana, Keith Bates, John M. Bennett, Guy Bleus, Antonino Bove, Piermario Ciani, Ryosuke Cohen, Mike Dickau, Arturo Fallico, H.R. Fricker, I Santini Del Prete, Ray Johnson, Graciela Gutierrez Marx, Rea Nikonova, Jürgen O. Olbrich, Clemente Padin, Pawel Petasz, Marlon Vito Picasso, Joan Puig, Claudio Romeo, Günther Ruch, Carol Stetser, The Sticker Dude, Rod Summers.
Attached to this publication, that will be mailed to all the authors involved that could not visit the exhibition in Viareggio, you find a 41’ Quicktime video on cd-r made on the opening day, that includes the complete vocal performance of Manitù Rossi. I thank Andrea Landini for the video camera and the shooting “in motion”, and photographer Andrea Sozzi for lending his skills as operator for the mini-concert of Manitù. Nothwithstanding the low technical quality (and too many chatters from my part), the video has been included to give a more complete idea of the spacial dimensions of the exhibition. The cd also contains high resolution scans of the works and photos of the gallery, together with a few bonuses. Special thanks to Raimondo and I Santini Del Prete for the photos and photo-elaborations of the show.
