Grayson was no kid when he started out, and here on Wail & Ride he continues the musical saga he delivered on his first album, lacing it with what he refers to as ‘trash-folk,’ blending stories from three years in a van on the road, of course drinking, and the leveling of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina … which might just make Grayson Capps a sort of electric eclectic Woody Guthrie. The album is not wild, though it is raw, steeped in the tradition of southern music with graveled honest earnest vocals along with an infusion of Chicago blues that will instantly bring to mind the likes of Dr. John, another New Orleans master, as Dr. John’s influences are subtly breathed throughout the production, along with what made the North Mississippi Allstars so famous. It’s probably best that I stop the musical description of this balladeer here, as his take on the genre is totally original and encompasses a variety of Americana styles that are built around the blues and his own weird take on country & western honky tonk.Grayson paints music pictures, paying homage to friends both real and imagined, is able to turn on a dime and present a song that had nothing at all to do with the one that preceded it in either style or form, seeming to be drawing his inspirations from things that catch his eye as he’s walking down the street. Yes, I realize that all this sounds counterintuitive, and that perhaps there are too many juxtapositions, though I assure you, if you enjoy the southern musical flavors, this is simply another bottle of sauce that will spice up your life.Review by Jenell Kesler
