Shalinrad
Laurie's grand scale opus United States remains a benchmark for musical ingenuity. Many stand out tracks such as the life of a performance artist in "New York Social Life", the dark metallic trance of "Closed Circuit", the funny story of the frightened airplane passenger turns sinister in "Language of the Future". The centerpiece of the show is Laurie's digital aria "O Superman". The William Burroughs inspired "Language is a virus" preceded by "Difficult Listening Hour" where Laurie speaks through a filter that gives her voice a deep Burroughesque edge. Laurie plays with language, objectivity, experimentation and logic. Yet for all the technical wonder that is Laurie Anderson... this is poorly documented... a fact Laurie herself admits. A video of the performance would have been even better. To date, Laurie has only released one performance commercially in the form of the film Home of the Brave. She may be going the way of Aeschylus of whom only about ten percent of his work is available today. We must hope not.
