Two volumes of Black Rock n' Roll came out sometime in the mid/ late 80s.... before the title of the series switched to Savage Kick. Compiled by the same folks who brought us Dangerous Doo Wop, Desperate Rock N Roll and others. For those unschooled in the early and mid '50s black proto-rock styles this stuff was a real eye-opener. Most rock n' roll compilatons came from the (still great but much more obvious) white angle. Yeah ok - Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed and Chuck Berry are acknowledged as being among the founding-fathers of RnR - but this series dug deeper with whole sets of wild and rambunctious early rockin' from the black side of the street.Virtually every track is a must-have classic - from the guitar blues of Lightnin' Hopkins to the screaming rhythm n' blues of Bunker Hill. In fact, there's a whole mess of styles going on here... from jump blues to doo wop to big band style sophisticated RnB... as well as the more downhome rough and ready style of RnB. All these discreet styles would be woven into the tapestry of rock n' roll during the early /mid years of the 1950s. The only thing missing is country and hillbilly - but that was, of course, coming from the white side of the street.Savage Kick eventually ran to at least 11 volumes.... all sadly unnofficial which meant that the artists never saw any royalties. Plus ça change. My favourite track off this one is Frankie Lee Sims' She Likes To Boogie Real Low. This one bursts out of the speakers with incredible and sublime energy. I picked up a 45 of this recently, sounds fantastic.
