The cover, back & front, tells the story here, but wait, the old adage... so let's just suppose you had to listen to this (LeFevre's voice goes from Chicago/Blood Sweat & Tears bravado - not quite the rock belter he preens to on the cover - to smooth funk)... it was the only record you had to spin.. well that would be sad, but seeing as Allen Tousssaint produces & Leo Nocentelli (The Meters) takes over on guitar & occasional bass duties - you'd be sure to wear out the last few songs on the B side first, featuring "I Keep On Loving You," & "Declaration of Love" both written by Allen, with his signature funky hooks (here softened to light Fm nonchalance, albeit listenable). "Sunlight," clocking in at over 5 minutes, is most reminiscent of Allen's excellent, "Southern Nights," LP - with Mylon doing his best to mirror his producer's classic smooth-as-honeysuckle-voicing. Ah, I miss that man - so, any discovery of his work (well, almost) brings back good memories of hearing him at Snug Harbor or up in NYC at his brunch & jazz club residencies after the Hurricane K.O. of Katrina ... The Isley cover "Work To Do," likewise rock-disco passable as it might be alright to hear cruising down the highway with random radio on & the wind taking the swiss cheese bite out of it... the rest of the LP - when it works - testifies to how a producer & musician of Toussaint's caliber can turn luke warm water into something close to satisfying - hear his work on the LeFevre penned "Life Saver" on the A side - patented Toussaint New Orleans funk, glossed for the easy consumption of an FM crossover market. Unfortunately, the funk bass & sparkling guitar on "Shake" can't keep me from thinking what a poor choice of covers this was - tho, the other folks within listenin' range of my speakers, who don't have an ounce of music snobbery in them, seem to be enjoying the effort (it's that dang forbidden fruit of k-nowledge that ruins ever-thin' for us heads) ... which just goes to show you, maybe just maybe if I didn't have to look at this cover or wade through the hackneyed, over wrought other 2/3rds of this LP - it wouldn't be the absolute worst (by far) LP to be stuck with... thanks Allen for slippin' a lil bit o' (dare I say?) gold (more like plastic, Mardi-Gras beads) amongst these mostly tawdry grooves...
