Kompakt stalwart Jonas Bering has his various tracks collected for BEHIND THE SILENCE, and with the careful melodies of "Melanie," you can hear why he's been around for a while. The swirling behind "Marine" almost conjures up an ocean eddy, even if the bass keeps things firmly on land. Bering also dips his toe into more pop waters with "I Can't Stop Loving You" (though the title track is also sort of peppy too). The previously unreleased track, "Spa," has that luxurious feel you'd expect from the title, but with a some Rolfing, rather than a massage. "Lincoln Road," similarly, goes in a deeper route. To my ears, however, the stand-outs are "Glass" and "Normandie 1." "Glass" is actually much less fragile than it sounds. Yes, it has some crystalline tones on top, but it's also surprisingly bass-heavy, keeping it from shattering entirely. "Normandie 1" has the same sort of soft-hard dynamic, but is slightly ups the tempo.
