Zugar
England’s favourite singer-songwriter, James Blunt, is back with ‘All the Lost Souls’. Released in 2007, it’s the follow-up to ‘Back to Bedlam’, his 2004 debut album which saw him garner worldwide fame. Whilst putting my manhood on the line, I’m not ashamed to say that I really like his first release, but with a newfound fan base eagerly awaiting new material, can he recapture the same magic as before? Umm... not quite. ‘All the Lost Souls’ is a bit of a mixed bag. Blunt is no doubt a talented songwriter and can pen some catchy tunes. His voice, often considered an acquired taste, works well with the music he writes, and certainly gives his output a unique vibe. And he’s certainly not afraid to put thoughts to paper with his lyrics. But there’s just an overbearing dreariness to this release that makes it hard for me to get into. Not that Jimmy Blunt has ever been a dancing queen disco machine anyway, but his more upbeat and vibrant songs are where his music truly comes alive. The album cover is pretty neat too! A photographic mosaic of the man, the myth, the legend himself, made up from hundreds of images of Blunt from childhood to the present day. Just throwing that out there.Admittedly, it’s not a bad album, the good songs are absolute delights to listen to, and the short durations make the weaker songs inoffensive listens. ‘I’ll Take Everything’, ‘Give Me Some Love’ and ‘Annie’ are all well-written and catchy, while hit single and absolute banger, ‘1973’ is easily one of Blunts finest pieces, and worthy of its high position in the charts, and in fact, this song alone probably makes ‘All the Lost Souls’ worth at least a listen or two. But otherwise, there’s just not enough memorable material to match up to what came before.
