Dizzy has historically been one of the most eclectic of musicians. The Be-Bop era that he pioneered with Charlie Parker is of course known to every jazz fan. His early investigations, with Chano Pozo, in Afro-Cuban rhythms have now become standard in the lexicon of jazz. And his intensity, emotion, technique, and above all the ideas with which he approaches music, are respected and admired by his peers.Dizzy visited Finland last year to do a concert with the Finnish Studio Orchestra. By coincidence a Cuban group, led by Arturo Sandoval, possibly the greatest trumpeter in Cuba today, was also appearing in Helsinki. Predictably, Dizzy got together with Arturo and in one all-night session that extended into the next morning, recorded this album. The rhythm section was all Finnish: Esko Linnavalli on piano, Pekka Sarmanto on bass, and Esko Rosnell on drums; this may very well be the first time that a Finnish group recorded with such illustrious soloists - all of which demonstrates the universality of jazz.
