I was very found of the album version of "I Woudn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing" (because it's quite short and to the point) until the Beatmasters single remix came along. I love this new take on the song (more sixties in style). It's just a little bit too long for my taste (4'45). For me, any pop song shouldn't last more than 4 minutes (yes even "It's A Sin" could have been shorter) but it was like an habit I guess for the Pet Shop Boys hits at the time to have a fake ending (Heart, Go West, etc).

The "Sasha Dub" of "West End Girls" here is not a usual dub mix (most of the time an instrumental remix or focused on beats and various effects). It could be named "Sasha Alternate Straight Mix" because it's a full vocal version, respectful of the original structure of the song from first verse to last chorus, unlike the "Sasha Remix", a very good mix which has a more common remix structure that includes remixed arrangements between the song parts.But the "Sasha Dub" is even better according to me with its long intro that grows on you and its outtro going back to where the track started (street sounds). One of the best "West End Girl" remixes available to date (early 2011). Makes this 12inch worth owning just for this track. Not for the "Grandballroom Dub" of "I Wouldn't Normally Do..." which is the exact same version as the 'Grandballroom Mix" available on UK CD#1 (I don't know why they gave a different name to the same remix...)

I WOULDN'T NORMALLY DO THIS KIND OF THING is fun synth-pop, as only the Pet Shop Boys can do it. DJ Pierre takes his "wild pitch" aesthetic to the original and delivers an angular bassline, overlaid with cut-up vocals. The Beatmasters give a more traditional mix, typical of the style at that time. "West End Girls" is given a low-key, low-tempo house mix by Sasha, back before his name was synonymous with the trance scene and still synonymous with the developing prog house scene. The b-side "Violence" is a little unfocused for my taste, but "Too Many People" more than takes up the slack.
