I can remember "America" receiving college radio airplay in addition to appearing on numerous dance floors in and around Houston, Texas. Several people I know referred to it as that "president song". It appears the message is satirical: To make the United States appear to have a reputation contradictory to its self-proclaimed peaceful intentions. The distant, heavy drums and piercing synths are overlaid by recordings of numerous American presidential speeches, putting emphasis on a religious foundation(read: Christian faith) to motivate their public to approve of political agendas, which is hinted as being to do whatever it takes to "win". A classic techno track, to be sure, and one that despite a possible message of reproach from afar, had Americans dancing with equal vigor to European club-goers in 1988-89.
