Total Playing Time: 72:28FULL DIMENSIONAL SOUND
Capitol's Full Dimensional Sound debuted with the dawn of the LP in 1949. Throughout the 1950's, in brilliant mono, and then in breathtaking stereo. Full Dimensional Sound had one aim to convey the depth and richness of the concert hall will all the impact and immediacy of the front-row seat.
The Parsifal and Meistersinger excerpts and the Siegfried Idyll were recorded in Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, on April 18, 1956.
The Tristan and Tannhäuser excerpts were recorded on Stage Seven of the Samuel Goldwyn Studios, Hollywood, California on July 13, 1961 and March 8, 1958, respectively.
Originally released on LP as SP 8368 (1, 2, 3, 5), SP 8488 and SP 8580 .
The Wagner works in Syria Mosque were recorded using an experimental two-channel microphone setup utilizing a pair of Altec 21B microphones set in a V-pattern and hung eight feet above and twelve feet from the edge of the Syria Mosque stage. An Ampex 350-2 two-track tape recorder was used for those sessions.
A trio of Neumann M-49 microphone formed the basic pickup for the Goldwyn recordings. For stereo left and right, two M-49's were elecated fifteen feet above and somewhat in front of the orchestra's concertmaster and first cellist. A single M-49 was placed over the woodwinds. An RCA 44-BX ribbon microphone reinforced the cello section while an RCA 77-DX ribbon covered the brass. ElectroVoice 666 microphones provided percussion and timpani accents as needed. All microphones were mixed in Goldwyn Overdub Stage C and recorded on an Ampex 300-3, 1/2 inch, three-track tape machine. The original two- and three-channel session tapes were used to produced this Compact Disc.
