Songs for the album were recorded in Detroit, at Hitsville (Studio A) with horns and strings overdubbed at Golden World (Studio B), from July 1968 throught the first week of April 1969. Everlasting Love was first tracked for the Four Tops in early February 1968; they did not record vocals and the tune was re-assigned to Ruffin and overdubbed by him in March 1969.

The Letter, I Let Love Slip Away, One More Hurt and I Pray Everyday were completed before the release of 'My Whole World Ended' and set aside; the backing track for I Let Love Slip Away had originally been recorded for Marvin Gaye in December 1968, but he did not record vocals and the tune was re-assigned to Ruffin three months later.

A Little More Trust and A Day In The Life ... were first recorded as a one-off single in Detroit, at both Hitsville (Studio A) and Golden World (Studio B), February through April 1972. The rest of the LP was then recorded similarly, July through September 1972. The Rovin' Kind and Go On With Your Bad Self were originally tracked well before these sessions for the Four Tops (May 1971) and Eddie Kendricks (November-December 1971), respectively, then re-assigned to Ruffin during the main LP recording dates.
