Until today I've only had the experience of hearing GAS in nothing higher than FLAC quality. That was a step up from the 4th hand MP3's someone gave me 12 years ago. Today I received the 3LP 2019 re-issue of Zauberberg and somehow GAS has taken on yet another life for me... The sound on these LP's is rich to the the point of a slight organic distortion and there are tones I've never heard in the digital versions. With these additions, the songs take on a new life, and seem to make way more sense than just hearing anything less. I don't know why people think re-issue = more packaging. I couldn't ask for anything more than what those in 1997 got to hear for the first time! Now - is Konigsforst coming soon???

"The record sides are not shown on the labels" Why not ? I find it really annoying. The same goes for 33 or 45 on Kompakt´s releases.

I'm waiting for my copy, hoping for a great vinyl quality and that it's treated with more respect at the pressing plant than the Gas box...To the comment below, I think this is not priced too high for 3 vinyls, only €24,90 at Kompakt. And those 'pops' at side D are intended to be. You can can hear on the CD version and digital files.Edit: I received my copy, and it looks and sounds perfect. No fingerprints or other issues. Now waiting for the other GAS represses...
Dreladred
Kind of a dissapointing reissue for that price. Vinyl is only 150 grams, lots of pops (especially on side D), housed in thin black sleeves and a flimsy single jacket.
net rider
Does this reissue sound better than the 1997 original issue?
Painwind
Can someone comment on the quality of artwork/packaging on this? Is it comparable to Nah Und Fern?I have the Box but considering changing to these represses as I dislike the format and production on that release..
Jorius
The packaging is similar to the single sleeve 2LP Rausch although on this one "GAS" is embossed. I personally think it looks good and is more than adequate. The inner sleeve are black glossy which I immediately replaced with my own black poly lined inner sleeves. I can't compare with Box or Nah Und Fern. I have not played all the way through yet. Sides A and B played flawlessly - the vinyl was clean and is flat.Edit: Referred to in another comment, I listened to Side D - also flawless. All the 'pops' I can hear are intentional.

I’ll buy the box from you. It’s been on my want list for a while

I JUST Purchased THIS AS mp3 FROM amazon. Is this SUPPOSED TO HAVE some sort OF CRACKLE TO IT ?ALMOST AS IF IT IS A VINYL lp PLAYING ??I noticed it heavily in track 2..and track 4 the crackle is dreadful.. truly ruins the album for me..
unmasked
Wow, that is rather ridiculous. I purchased it from Amazon and the sound quality is so bad in spots, I complained and got a refund. I question the artist's sanity, if he says he intended it to sound terrible.I have a very large collection of ambient music, approaching 10,000 tracks. I see no excused for an ambum to be full of pops and cracks and hiss, so it sounds like it was ripped from a dirty LP from the 1940s ?
Uste
yes, the production design has a lot of hiss and crackle

Wait a minute, this is up for pre-order on boomkat with this description: "The classic 1997 album, finally reissued as a standalone 3LP".
cyrexoff
They will re-issue all GAS Lp's induvidually, that were in the GAS box, early 2019 (currently scheduled for February/March). Catalog numbers are Kompakt 370.1 - 4.
Nilabor
What's up with the different track lengths versus the CD/LP?
Yar
I would absolutely love to add Gas to my collection but the prices are so jaw-dropping. Ate there any plans afoot to make Gas affordable to the unwashed masses ?
Rindyt
You can also buy four GAS albums (Konigsforst, Zauberberg, Oktember EP, Pop) in iTunes for a very good price.

Definetly Wolfgang Voigt best Album, Higly hypnotic, Dark, deep and beautiful, a pure dream.

The whole album is bloody trippy. Go find a virgin forest near you and walk there, breathe its air, feel it and let your mind be soaked by this piece from beginning to the end.. there's something special in testing super atmospheric albums outside and getting memories of (not neccesarily) the first listening and then clearly remembering the place, the mood and even the smell whenever listeining to that or this album again, even after a couple of years. And Zauberberg 7, what a magnificent album closer - one of the most beautiful and epic ones I have ever had a pleasure to listen to.
Skiletus
Dark and heavy listening with a reward. Deepness in music redefined and put into position hardly anyone will ever come close.

Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now,Thus much let me avow-You are not wrong, who deemThat my days have been a dream;Yet if hope has flown awayIn a night, or in a day,In a vision, or in none,Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seemIs but a dream within a dream.I stand amid the roarOf a surf-tormented shore,And I hold within my handGrains of the golden sand-How few! yet how they creepThrough my fingers to the deep,While I weep- while I weep!O God! can I not graspThem with a tighter clasp?O God! can I not saveOne from the pitiless wave?Is all that we see or seemBut a dream within a dream?Edgar Allan Poe (as if he knew this work)

Not long after Gas had caught our attention with his unique self-titled debut in 1996, this classic followed which proceeded to popularize the project with the dub techno and ambient crowd. It's a beautiful world, with a euphoric orchestra and a relentless dub rhythm. Zauberberg I begins without the beat and just wonderful atmospheric pads - this should be Gas' theme tune, since the feeling conjured is light-headedness - a somniferous, beautiful state which sums up the name of the project. Zauberberg II is the start of the lush foggy rhythm and enveloping bass, but with the incomprehensible human voice in the background, it's actually a déjà vu moment. And Zauberberg III has to be one of the crowning achievements of Gas with the enraptured cry of a distant orchestra: this is a spine-tingling psychedelic train journey. In Zauberberg IV, Gas does doom jazz (a genre worth checking out if you are so inclined, I recommend starting with Bohren & Der Club of Gore). Zauberberg V, too, is very murky, with an angry rhythm and infinite depth, and only fragments of the orchestra appearing now and then. In Zauberberg VI, the orchestra builds up from nebulous craters into earth-shattering repining - this is the most defiant Gas composition ever. It's worth noting that the progression in this track is much more obvious than in the usual repetitive Gas track, yet the hypnotism is maintained with the great bassline which is later to be used in Konigforst I. Then we reach Zauberberg VII, similar to the first track and totally beautiful.Overall, this is the foggiest, darkest and most menacing Gas album, yet there is still the right amount of euphoria and moments of alluring ambiance at the beginning and the end. There is huge depth to this music and wonderful subcutaneous layers. This ranks alongside Konigsforst and Pop as Voigt's best compositions.

I doubt I will add anything to the descriptions already provided, but I cannot let this release be here without my recommendation. This CD is a drug. No, really, it is. How else can such euphoric emotions come about by a mere ambient work? Personally, I hate ambient music. If it weren't for the subtle kick-drum beat during most of this album I probably would have turned away... at any rate, the droning beat, the ominous dark pads, the deep atmospheres all create a haunting, isolated environment that is addictive and demented. At a close second place are the Oktember and Königsforst releases. But Zauberberg is one of the most important minimal releases on Discogs.
Ubranzac
Yes, one of the best releases on MP. It's something undescrible how this music can affect you - first track is nothing but ambient sound layers, which puts you in the state of blissfulness and makes you don't want to go back. All other tracks have pumping beat - just like the second one, my favorite. No words can describe the pure beauty of this sound imagination. Beauty which hides under the layers of distortions and roughnesses, but can be uncover by attentive listener.
Galanjov
Although minimal this album bursts of emotion mainly due to subdued orchestral strings that emerge constantly during your march. I say "march" because Zauberberg is not a meandering ambient release, but feels pretty directional and uses foggy beats to keep things evergoing. Truly delightful album.
