Inerrace
An interesting collection of work, encompassing songs from his first solo album thru Trans. Also an interesting band comprised of pieces from various points in time as well, compatriots from solo albums, Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse and the Stray Gators eras. Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren, Ralph Molina, Bruce Palmer and Joe Lala, and backing support on synth from Joel Bernstein on a few tracks. The pressing is generally clean with no significant discernible surface noise. One significant pop on my side 2. Other than that quite good. The mix is good, but the sound a little bit lacking. Clear, and fairly balanced, the overall levels are pretty good, no typical really forward aspects common to bootlegs (vocals either way in front or way in back, etc.) But it does have a noticeable "back of the room" muffled overtone. Which actually reminded me of BEING at a NY concert while listening, not a studio recording. So the mix does, in an odd way, enhance the "feel" of the album album if you close your eyes and forget where you are... (Rega 8/Aria/Apheta 2, Prima Luna Duo KT88 tube amp and Dynaudio Excite X34 speakers, so a "good" sound system for quality assessment).Due to the familiarity of the band members the tunes are loose, but the band is tight... They play very well together and it sounds like a bunch of friends jamming and having a good time on stage, but is not a "Grateful Dead type" concept of make-it-up-as-we-go-and-hope-it-doesn't-fall-on-its-face-in-the-process (which can go very good or... ). This continuity and alignment of the band comes thru in the "spaces between the notes".Not a "must have" as all of it is (similarly) available elsewhere on other records, but as one of many of the point-in-time references to Neil Young's career and interesting artifact. And as a band I am not sure was around long, or ever recorded elsewhere (maybe other boots from this tour exist, probably likely but I am not aware of them) it has a slightly different sound to some of the songs... if you know the work well and listen closely. A good quality, historically interesting, nice addition to a Neil Young aficionado's collection.
