If the Forss album wasn't enough to convince you that Sonar Kollektiv does more than just jazzy downtempo, the strange neo-folk of Double U's LIFE BEHIND A WINDOW should lay to rest any doubt. From the processed vocals of "In Vain" to the controlled chaos of "Relax," the folk elements are augmented by an abstract underpinning. The gentle cutting in "There's a Chance" belies the fact that there's an actual song there too. "Darker" and "Blind Colors" go much more abstract and almost wouldn't be out of place on a traditional IDM album. "Back to Reality" also gets us back to the folk guitar, though in a darker setting this time; "Hypocrisy" follows in this vein. My personal favorite on the album, "Hard Times," seamlessly integrates a simple, pretty refrain with some crunchy percussion. A few tracks, like "Pressure," fall a little flat, but the carefully structured oddity of "Secret Love" helps redeem the album. The short closer "Story About" seems to encapsulate what this album is all about: electronic folk, German-style.
