I remember this tune from 1993 and have been searching/googling for it for more than a decade...then it pops up on a YouTube playlist...what a classic...

Stunning record, 'To be Surreal' is one of the finest and most beautiful examples of ambient techno. Some of you may have noticed that new Ostgut Ton offshoot put out a compilation of his material last year, and with another expected in the not too distant future, lets hope it gets an inclusion.

Isn’t it great to listen to those golden techno moments and be completely overwhelmed by the sound? This masterpiece has that effect on me. ‘To Be Surreal’ and ‘Millentum’ are wonderful, spacy techno tracks from the early nineties. I believe this is Luke Slater’s most beautiful record under his 7th plain guise. And that means a lot when you have listened to fantastic albums like ‘My Yellow Wise Rug’ and ‘The 4 Cornered Room’. It is music made in the years when techno and ambient melted so well together. Luke Slater was one of the champions in creating multi-layered tracks without losing the atmosphere. He made tracks where you could listen to, over and over again and where you could always hear something new. I hope these tracks will last forever and will be rediscovered in the future, rather than his ‘commercial’ recordings which are forgettable.

You're absolutely right...but it wasn't just about the music that made these tunes so classic, the listeners had something to say and the times, they were so different...there wasn't so much fear, and there was certainly was more hope...hearing it again now, I remember that hope...and I hope for that again...
